Inventions

The basic product for any developments in this area was wood charcoal, which was in use since long before. During the end of the 19th century wood charcoal was industrially used for instance in sugar factories for decolorizing sugar solutions. In these years - end of the 19th century - first refining of the product took place by steam treatment in a factory in Austria (Stockerau). The merit of Mr. Ostrejko was that he developed this process for industrial utilization, using water steam and chemicals for the activation process, the term "Activated Carbon" was born. His first patents on activated carbon :

Patents:
1900, October 13 – Chemical Activation of wood using CaCl2. British patent 14,224
1901 – French patent 304,867
1901, August 30 - German patent 136,792
1903, September 15 – Thermal Activation of Wood with Steam. USA patent 739,104
1920, December 16 – Swiss Patent

Mr. Ostrejko worked as consultant for a factory in Austria and in Poland.

He may have been associated with the first production of activated carbon under his patents (1909) in Czechoslovakia.

FACTORY

Mr. Ostrejko build factory in Poland, Raciboz city (until 1945 was part of Upper Silesia at that time, it was a part of Germany) which is working till nowadays (photo above).

The activated carbon factory is still existing under the name "CARBON" as part of the company ELBAR-KATOWICE. It is called the world's oldest industrial activated carbon manufacturing plant. This may be the same factory he adapted practically  his inventions.

After World War II Ostrejko's files were destroyed in a German bombing during World War II.
